MMA Sites of Interest

Maine Maritime Academy, a Maine public college specializing in marine related programs, is located in the small village of Castine, Maine. Visitors are welcome to walk the campus. The nautical enthusiast may find the following sites of interest:

• The training ship State of Maine - a 500-foot training platform for students pursuing an officer's license from the U.S. Coast Guard as a third mate or third assistant engineer at the college. The vessel takes students on annual two-month training cruises to foreign and domestic ports-of-call.
• The historic arctic schooner Bowdoin - an 88-foot schooner owned and operated by the college as a traditional sail training platform. The Bowdoin is a National Historic Landmark and the official sailing vessel of the state of Maine.
• A granite memorial honors Merchant Mariners and members of the Naval Armed Guard from Maine who died in service to their country during World War II. Sponsored by the Downeast Maine Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veteran's Association, the memorial is located on the lawn in front of Leavitt Hall.
• An historic three inch, 50 caliber gun used on a merchant ship during World War II honors all Maine Maritime Academy alumni lost at sea or killed in the service of their country. The gun is located on the lawn in from of the college student center and is accessible from Pleasant Street or via a paved walkway on the south side of the building.
• The college library, Nutting Memorial Library, is open year round to the public. The library's holdings are particularly strong in the area of maritime studies, marine technology, and nautical history.
• The college bookstore holds regular business hours and sells Maine Maritime Academy clothing and souvenirs, as well as maritime books, text books, and supplies. The bookstore is located in the lower level of the college dormitory, Curtis Hall. Please phone 207-326-2430 for hours of operation as they vary by season.
• The main dining room of the college's student center is home to a number of ship models. The public is welcome to view the models during normal business hours.
