Spring-Tronic EWaste Drive Exceeds Goal

CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy student organizations, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), and Student Environmental Activists (SEA), have announced the results of a jointly sponsored Spring-tronic eWaste Drive held earlier this spring on the college campus. The eWaste Drive was open to the community, and according to organizers, more than 6,900 lbs. of of mixed recyclables were collected as part of the effort. Mixed recyclables consisted of items such as televisions, laptops, CPUs, and miscellaneous computer peripherals. The drive exceeded an original collection goal of 4,000 lbs.

Student organizers orchestrated the event to promote sustainable consumption of electronic and a sustainable economy. Complementing the actual collection of recyclable materials, students involved in the project experienced a variety of research, management, and project organizational activities. Initial research leading to the collection revealed State of Maine regulations regarding disposal and collection of electronic waste. Student teams worked closely with Academy officials to ensure compliance with all State and Federal environmental regulations, and coordinated with eWaste Recycling Solutions, of Auburn, Maine, to facilitate collection and disposal of the electronic waste. To maximize exposure of the event, the student teams worked with the Maine Maritime Academy office of public affairs to announce the event to internal and external audiences. The collection drive, held on Monday, March 15, was organized, monitored, and recorded by MMA SIFE and SEA team members.
