Congressman Michaud Addresses 67th Graduating Class


CASTINE, Maine - The Honorable Michael H. Michaud, United States House of Representatives, D-Maine, addressed the graduating class at Maine Maritime Academy's (MMA) 67th Commencement on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 11 a.m., in Alexander Fieldhouse. He received an honorary doctorate from the college.

According to MMA President Leonard Tyler, the college recognized Michaud's ongoing service to the state and his support of education. "Congressman Michaud's tireless efforts on behalf of the people of the State of Maine deserve our appreciation and recognition," said Tyler. "He is a champion of education and veteran's services, as well as a strong advocate for the transportation infrastructure of our nation, all critical interests of Maine Maritime Academy and its graduates. Michaud was formerly employed by Great Northern Paper Company for 29 years and is a member of USW Local #4-00037. As a Maine native and a former paper mill employee, Congressman Michaud is as a tremendous role model for our students, the majority of whom hail from Maine towns. His record of service and accomplishments sets a standard for our students and we look forward to honoring him."

The college also presented an honorary doctor of science degree to Frederick J. Harris, MMA Class of 1967, President of General Dynamics NASSCO and a Vice President of General Dynamics Corporation. A recognized leader in the marine field, Harris serves as the Chairman of the American Shipbuilding Association. He was awarded the Maine Maritime Academy Outstanding Alumni Award in 2000, and the William M. Kennedy Award from the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers in 2002. He was recognized for his ongoing leadership in the maritime industry and his contributions to the U.S. shipbuilding community.

Commencement activities began at 9 a.m. with the annual awards program in Delano Auditorium, Leavitt Hall. The college's class of 2010 included 4 associate in science, 187 bachelor of science, and 14 master of science degree candidates. The graduating class represented nearly 80 Maine communities and 19 other states, as well as Puerto Rico, China, Jamaica, Kenya, Kuwait, and South Africa.

MMA President Leonard Tyler and Victoria M. Larson of Windham, Maine, chair of the board of trustees, presented diplomas. Dr. John Barlow, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, oversaw the exercises.
