Student Groups Join Together to Host E-Waste Drive

CASTINE, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy's (MMA) chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the student club, Student Environmental Activists (SEA), will team together to sponsor an eWaste Drive for the greater-Castine community. The day-long program to promote the responsible collection and disposal of unwanted electronics will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the MMA Fieldhouse. The event is offered free of charge to the campus community and the general public.

According to student organizers, materials collected at the drive will be handled by a professional recycling crew from eWaste Recycling Solutions, LLC (ERS), of Auburn, Maine. Founded in 2008, ERS provides safe and environmentally sound disassembly, consolidation, and transportation services for recycling and disposal of electronic devices. They also handle products categorized as e-waste under local, state, and federal law, and are among the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's list of consolidators approved to participate in Maine's system for recycling household e-waste.

Materials that will be accepted at the drive will include computer monitors, televisions, console televisions, desktop copiers/printers, scanners, fax machines, central processing units (CPUs), laptops, UPS batteries (battery backup systems), and other computer peripherals (mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc.). Items that will not be collected at the drive include anything containing Freon, fluorescents lamps/PCBs, mercury devices, or batteries (except for those that are contained in a laptop computer or MP3 player). Items will not be accepted for drop-off after posted event hours, and the event will close promptly at 3:30 p.m.

Maine Maritime Academy's chapter of Students in Free Enterprise encourages students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, and to use their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects. Founded in 1975 and active on more than 600 college campuses in more than 40 countries, SIFE is a non-profit organization that works in partnership with business and higher education to provide college students the opportunity to make a difference and to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of free enterprise.

Student Environmental Activists aim to promote awareness about environmental issues and climate change by exploring and implementing campus-based programs. The group encourages those on campus to take basic steps to reduce the risk of climate change and/or plan to adapt to change as it occurs. Group-sponsored activities are based on the idea that each person on campus can aid in the fight against changing climate by reducing personal consumption of fuel and electric energy, by recycling both plastics and paper, and by making environmentally-conscious consumer decisions such as choosing renewable energy sources and "green" products.
