Community Forum Focuses on Waterfront

Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) and its professional campus planning team, Auburn-based Harriman Architects & Engineers, will host a series of community forums this spring to engage members of the campus and local communities in the early phases of a campus development plan. The community forums are scheduled to take place in March and April, with two meeting times scheduled for each session to allow the public a choice of attending during the day or in the early evening.

Introductory sessions are planned for Monday, March 8, at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., in the Harborview Room of the Harold Alfond Student Center on the MMA campus. Follow-up sessions summarizing the incorporation of community input and showcasing preliminary schematic designs will be held on Monday, April 19, at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., Harborview Room, Harold Alfond Student Center. A special session specifically oriented toward the efforts of the ad-hoc Town of Castine/Maine Maritime Academy waterfront committee will be held on Monday, March 29, at 3 p.m., at the Castine Town Hall. All sessions are open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend.

The community forums will seek to engage the greater campus community as Maine Maritime Academy moves forward with plans to structurally, functionally, and aesthetically improve the campus. The planning process began earlier this academic year with an in-house assessment and brainstorming session with faculty and staff to determine and prioritize campus needs. The next step in the process is to involve the greater community and introduce the professional planning team, share the outcomes of earlier discussions, solicit and collect community input on related key subjects, and discuss ideas and concerns.

The community forums will also serve to introduce proposed new campus facilities that are the focus of this initiative, including the ABS Center for Engineering and Applied Research, plans to increase on-campus parking capacity, and waterfront renovations and improvements.
